With Love, Brani

Love is in the air and Dolldom celebrates V-Day 2012 basking in the glow of Brani Mladenov's mini collection for the Barbie doll. Brani, a professional fashion designer for the flesh and blood type, fell in love with the Fabulous Blonde ever since he spotted Golden Dream Barbie in a magazine. Those illustrations impressed him so that he traced the image of the golden diva on paper and gave her different hair, fashion, and color palette. Brani grew up in Bulgaria prior to the democracy and fashion dolls like Barbie were not available. In fact, Mattel’s Queen of Fashion was finally discovered in Bulgaria in the 1990s and Brani was the first who started collecting Barbie dolls in his country.

Brani is big fan of the designs of Anna Sui and of the endless imagination of Robert Best. Sonia Rykiel is an inspiration too as well as Karl Lagerfeld and Jean Paul Gaultier. In addition to Barbie, Brani enjoys Blythe's style, Mod couture, Fashion Royalty’s slick look, and Darrell Wallace's handmade and hand painted resin dolls.

Brani follows a feeling when he begins to design. This collection titled Vin et Pain evokes the warm feelings of two essential staples of mankind's nourishment: bread and wine. Essential, yes. And equally luxurious. For this Dolldom exclusive feature, Barbie Basics and Barbie Fashion Model Collection models regally show off the exquisite creations of this talented young designer. Back in the 1990’s, when the economic reality greatly differed from today’s, it was many a Barbie doll’s collector dream to create his or her own doll. Lace is one very special example. Handmade and hand painted by artist Ann Sullivan, Lace came to be in 1992 and was a doll ahead of her times. Made of resin, Lace was also articulated and strung (most ingeniously, we must add) at a time when articulation was not the name of the game. As a consequence, the Lace doll poses like a dream, most obviously when sitting, as her thighs and legs are separate pieces. Her head cannot only turn but also tilt.

Advertised religiously in the classifieds section of the much missed Barbie Bazaar magazine, the Lace doll was produced for a short period and is today a very hard to find beauty. For this feature, a Lace doll from the collection of make-up artist super star Wonderbilly came to Dolldom’s studio for an exclusive sitting with our photographer.

Daisy is the new resin ball jointed doll designed and realized by Korean artist Jung Hee Park. Having collaborated before with the exquisite Hee for a Haute Doll feature for her other sensational character, Bambola, Dolldom was aware that a wonderful creation would soon join its realm. And Daisy is everything a dollector wishes to have in a doll. Like Bambola, Daisy is an amalgam of pop references distilled into a unique entity. The doll comes dressed in a variety of fashion styles and can also exchange clothing with Takara's Licca and Blythe, making her an natural fit in may collections. But it has to be Hee's energy and essence that imbue the doll with incredible magic. Daisy feels classic and essential, like a doll you've always had in your collection. She in fact is a dream doll that finally becomes reality.

Winter Wonderland

Dolldom denizens of all ages, sizes, and materials gather to celebrate winter and to reflect as 2011 draws to an end. With its short days and colder weather, the season calls for warm hearts and hearths to keep chills of the skin and the soul at bay. So what to do? Give love and kindness to one and all. Then, feather your nest with ornaments of glitter and tinsel. Create a peaceful vignette with which to regale the eyes and make paper hats for the kids to wear as they play around the Christmas tree. Give the gift of a hand knit sweater to ward off the cold. And dazzle at that special soirée in a grand couture gown.

Dolldom wishes to thank all of its friends and colleagues without whom it would be impossible to enjoy life de luxe. May 2012 bring us all a world of health, peace, and prosperity!

Abominably Classic
The holiday season could not be complete without one of Dolldom’s favorite characters from the classic stop action animated special Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. Bumble, the abominable snow monster, has enthralled many a child who has sat scared and mesmerized by this giant ball of white plush.

New Year’s Eve
Candescence Sydney Chase wears an updated version of her friend Tyler Wentworth’s Millennium Ball blue silks gown. Dolldom friend Travis Kaller shortened the hem, decorated it with black lace, and added geometric beads to the bodice.

Her exclusive mood-lifting videos and joy-inducing audio recordings are a necessity for all of Dolldom's denizens who live happier and more beautiful lives thanks to them. To honor the dynamic Miss Carrington, Dolldom and Sydney Chase, president and owner of the famed Chase Modeling Agency, collaborated on this exclusive tribute to Gay Carrington style. Miss Chase, so taken with Miss Carrington’s elegance and strength, took the job for herself – “For no one but me is gonna be Gay!” - as she vivaciously exclaimed. Dolldom friend Vin Trapani, make-up magician to the vinyl set, performed the thorough makeover. The wardrobe, in its majority, is the work of Beauty and Glamour maven Liz Cole, creator and proprietor of Retros of Seattle. The results are breathtaking. Miss Chase, upon seeing the photos exclaimed: “I am just thrilled to be Gay! I truly love her style and panache. It’s been quite the transformative experience.”

Dolldom wishes to thank Vin Trapani of Vincent Anthony Repaints and Liz Cole for their support in this collaboration. Without them this unofficial, fan made Gay Carrington doll fest would not be as luxuriously grand.

Real Russian Couture: Bakhtiër Designs for Barbie

Dolldom watches out for the fabulously different and genuinely unique. A year and a half ago, we had the honor of collaborating with Russian fashion designer Bakhtiër on a feature to celebrate Barbie's 50th Anniversary for Murat-Caviale's Haute Doll magazine. After an exciting interview and photo shoot featuring an exclusive collection of his designs for the Silkstone Barbie Fashion Model doll, Dolldom learned that Murat-Caviale would no longer publish their much acclaimed magazine. But as luck would have it, this month's Doll Reader/Haute Doll, under the inspired direction of Kathryn Peck, finally has published the exclusive portfolio and conversation with the young designer. Interestingly, this feature expresses the vision of real Russian fashion designer for humans - quite different from the line that Mattel presented earlier in 2011 that ran the gamut from playful matryoshka styling to haughty tsarina in emboridered velvet.

Happy Halloween 2011! Dolldom Celebrates Halloween in Vintage Style

It's Halloween! As the days grow shorter and the night shadows enter our eyes and minds, we know it's time to reconnect with our ancestors and celebrate the festivals of harvest. But at the same time, this day of monsters and ghost finds its origins in many a belief that on October 31st a crack between the worlds opened, giving free reign to goblins, witches, demons, and other fabulously weird creatures. What a better way to celebrate Halloween 2011 than by emulating the style of vintage Halloween postcards? As it is in these stupendous mementos that we find a charming world were scary meets sweet, where Jack-O-Lanterns, tiny sparkly monkey-like insects, witches on crescent moons, and a myriad anthropomorphic pumpkin critters make us daydream with childlike wonder and a deliciously spooky feeling that makes hairs stand on end!

Dolldom takes time to recognize the beauty of a so-called basic doll. In our eyes, there is nothing basic about Basic Platinum Cami by Tonner Doll Company. Mattel (well, let's be specific - Ruth Handler) created a concept back in 1959 that is still in our opinion the way to go. But seldom do we see a doll in lingerie or bathing suit that is ready to wear what the dollector selects for her. Be it in factory made or handcrafted garb made by the many talented freelance designers, the basic doll transforms into a vision of beauty and personal style. Kudos to Tonner Doll Company for keeping it basic.

Ralph Eugene Meatyard (1925–1972) was an optician from Lexington, Kentucky who often integrated dolls, masks, and other stylized representations of the human form, along with his children, in his photographic work. Dolldom applauds this interesting exploration of the power of the seemingly inanimate. After all, it is what we are all about.

Unlike Hunca Munca and Tom Thumb in Beatrix Potter's "The Tale of Two Bad Mice", the denizens of Dolldom indulge their collective sweet teeth looking at beautiful cakes and pies that do not come off their plates. Nonetheless, when the time comes for our human associates to enjoy a cup of espresso or green tea, nothing beats the company of a really good confection. Recently, Dolldom met San Francisco Bay Area pâtissière Terri Rivers. Her business, Divine Petites, captivated us with its name, old-fashioned wax paper tied with string packaging, and organic ingredients.

To celebrate October, Terri regaled us with her amazing ginger cake with candied ginger topping. This good-for-human-health delight comes in big cupcake size as well as Bundt cake miniatures. Tiny need not mean bland for these all-organic pieces of Heaven pack quite a punch. Bernabé, a Myling porcelain doll by Katarina Carlsson played tea-and-coffee-time host amidst a collection of vintage cream and gold porcelain and ceramic plates.

ABC's Pan Am? Barbie Did It First!

ABC's new series "Pan Am", slated to debut this coming September 25, 2011, promises to give "Mad Men" aficionados another delicious helping of the much in vogue 1960s, 1963 to be exact. Dolldom has little hope that the new series will be as beautifully written as the aforementioned "Mad Men" but at the same time hopes that it will not become the horrendous mess that "Desperate Housewives" is (was?). At the very least, there will be talented human dolly Christina Ricci to watch.

At any rate, the Barbie doll worked this gig already. It was 1966 when Mattel gave the forever iconic American Girl Barbie doll (and yes, those eternal Bubble Cut models too!) her very own Pan American Airways Stewardess uniform (stock number 1678). Super hard to find, the vintage set was re-issued in 2010 as part of the Nostalgic Reproductions series. And the 21st century version does not look bad at all on a vintage high color American Girl Barbie doll!

Monty the Miniquin by DAE Originals deserves a second (maybe this is your first) look. A beautifully made vinyl doll, Monty came out along with Vivian the Miniquin in 2005 to the delight of collectors who enjoy the vintage look. Meant to be store mannequins, not real people, Monty and Vivian were issued in styles representative of three decades: 1940's, 1950's, 1960's. Expertly constructed fashions allowed the dolls to fulfill their life mission: be superb clotheshorses. But the truth is that both Monty and Vivian have an allure that has nothing to do with being vacant dummies. They are expressive and alive. Soon to be re-released in resin with fully articulated bodies, the mannequins of Diamonds Department Store will join the growing number of beautiful creatures in Dolldom.

Since 1977, the annual San Francisco Decorator Showcase, the West Coast's premiere design showhouse event, has benefited San Francisco University High School's financial aid program, raising nearly $11 million in its 33 years. The San Francisco Decorator Showcase allows San Francisco University High School to offer financial aid to its students. It is through the community's continued support that quality education has been made available over the past three decades to hundreds of deserving Bay Area students.

Mattel, oh-so-swell back in 1959, changed the world of dolls with Barbie's introduction. Dolldom friend Joey Versaw has collected dolls since childhood and ever since this modern day Gepetto has wished upon a star to have his very own doll line. And after much blood, sweat, and many tears, Mr. Versaw has realized his dream fully and beautifully. Last May 2010, we profiled Mary Magpie, a boudoir-inspired beauty who took our collective breath away. Since then, Dolldom has rolled out the red carpet to welcome four more characters from this enchanting line of art dolls.

Each Mary Magpie Evolution doll is a one-of-a-kind piece of art to which Joey devotes an average 5 hours. From assemblage, to hairstyling, to the hand painting of their fabulous faces, the end result is Joey’s vision. Joey kindly listens to ideas for the next special look and much to our delight and amazement, each 12-inch doll always exceeds our expectations. In addition to commissions, Joey offers basic dolls with which the lucky dollector can play fashion for hours as Mary fits into many similarly scaled fashion doll clothing. Joey tells us that he plans to offer Mary’s own mini comic books, illustrated by comic artist James Meadows, to narrate her fabulous life and adventures. And very soon too, Mary and her friends will be issued with a new body with increased articulation.

As proven by the accompanying photos, Mary not only felt right at home in Dolldom’s collection, she and her friends stole our hearts in a second.

Capturing Joy: Photographing Children

Children. Tiny tots. Little darlings. As with any other doll, children have unique attitudes and energy that ought to be captured in a good portrait. And as with any other doll, our love for our children should not impede us from discovering and showing their best side or angle. It is important too to engage them in the process of portrait making. Children will have fun selecting a special outfit or costume and scouting for the perfect location in which to compose the portrait. Most importantly, once in front of the camera, most children (except Agnes and Viktor Dreary, below) will smile and be playful.

Capturing them in a reflective moment when they are lost in their thoughts or absorbed by play will garner a revealing glimpse into their essence, the one that will remain consistent all throughout life.

Fabulous Faces: Wonderbilly Receives Dolldom's Award of Excellence

Nowadays, there seems to be an emphasis on reality and real life. Reality shows are the most obvious manifestation in today's mass entertainment. Real people in T-shirts and jeans are interested in real people in T-shirts and jeans letting it all hang out. This current fascination with the quotidien has even impacted the realm of fashion dolls. As fragmented as the most dysfunctional of families, the doll collecting world has sectors that prefer their dolls to look like and wear "the real thing": from anatomical detailing on breasts to up-to-the-minute fashions such as those spotted in shopping mall boutiques. Then there are others who collect fashion dolls to revel in the drop-dead glamour and sophistication best illustrated by Erwin Blumenfeld's iconic photo for Vogue (below).

For there is nothing more inspiring than a woman (or man, for that matter) who is aiming for an ideal of elegance and style. Yes, jeans and T-shirts can be sexy and glamorous - when worn by the fabulous Barbie Basics 2.0. But there is a more rarefied type of glamour, one that in spite of existing frozen in time, is to this day, referenced by style mavens of the likes of Angelina Jolie and Sarah Jessica Parker. In this universe of pure glam, lounge lizards abound in smoky piano bars while exuberant dames unabashedly bask in the glow of chunky jewelry. For no one can deny that shapely, full lips do make a woman look good.

Think about it... It's morning and there's no coffee (or vodka) left in the flat. What to do? Go out to the corner market to fetch some. But not before putting on big dark glasses and applying a true-blue red lipstick – it's as basic and essential as breathing and walking in stiletto heels. It could be said that Vintage Barbie left its indelible mark (blood red, we should add) in our collective mind and our idea of glamour is not about insipid reality. It is about an impossible chic that sounds very much like Spanish sexpot Sarita Montiel singing Quizás, smells like Shocking perfume by Schiaparelli, and tastes like whiskey-infused Maraschino cherries.

The very democratic Mr. Billy Lope, who prefers to remain (unsuccessfully) under the radar, always starts his Wonderbilly e-Bay auctions at 99 cents. Finding inspiration in the classic vintage looks of Tex Avery cartoons, Dale Messick's Brenda Starr comic strips, and the intoxicating glamour of Hollywood's Technicolor dreamland, Billy not only salvages the factory-produced set, he gives each one of them a life – torrid at times – as he only paints when the mood is right. As the girls in this portfolio can attest to, he must be in the right mood all of the time. One more thing is evident: Billy leaves a big chunk of his happy heart in each one of his vivacious dames. Reason why Dolldom gives Billy Lope its first Award of Excellence of 2011.

It was with great delight that we at Dolldom received news late in October about Tyler Wentworth. Forever a member of this world of aromatic vinyl, Tyler has never not been present. In fact, few dolls maintain their integrity after their tenth anniversary the way our gorgeous designer has.

In past seasons we have seen her judiciously reduce her offerings in order to place the spotlight (what a generous gesture!) on her friend Antoinette. And as much as we love that young super model with the amazing morphing powers, at Dolldom Tyler exists without rivals. She has it all. The storyline. The full decade. A place in fashion doll history. Her own dress form. She even has Sydney Chase! No one touches Tyler.

Tyler wears her own design, titled Convertible Cocktail. This red number gives any little black dress its run for the money.

For this Dolldom exclusive, our gal pal shows us a new look for the winter of 2010. It's all very I'm-a-modern-Geisha-and-I-love-Kabuki-make-up for the glittery end of the first decade of the 21st century.

And it's all as classy and chic as Tyler has always been. After all, that is how she and her brood will go down in history. As the epitome of classic American style. Classy Cocktail Talk: Stirring a Moment of Happiness

With a glass (vintage, s’il vous plait!) in hand, the civilized set marks the end of business for yet another busy day. That moment when the day pauses and dresses up in soothing navy blue velvet best exemplifies those eternal instants of perfection to which the denizens of Dolldom aspire. For the cocktail hour is a most magical ceremony that when properly executed will regale you with an unabashed feeling of possibility. After an intense journée of mad productivity, who does not desire to reward the brain, the palate, and the soul with a delicious libation?

We at Dolldom insist that the perfect cocktail hour looks not unlike a witty evening spent with Myrna Loy and William Powell (and Asta!) in their Nick and Nora incarnations for The Thin Man.

Even tragic heroines played by Joan Crawford and Gloria Swanson honored the cocktail, although a tad too much.

Dolldom celebrates the promise of happiness that only a well-mixed drink can deliver with delightful variations of classic cocktails that not surprisingly are the faves of many of Dolldom’s favorite designers. The twist, you may add? It’s all in the details.

The Knitter’s Poisson

A favorite of knitting maven Uyek, creator of the kicky Lettuce dress and uncontested queen of the turban, The Knitter’s Poisson is a purist’s delight.

Ingredients:
2 ounces of gin. Dolldom suggests trying No. 209, San Francisco’s own gin.
A drop of water. Hetch Hetchy only please.
Five or six capers on a toothpick. One more for the bottom of the glass.

Chill the vodka over ice in the freezer. Pour in a brandy glass, add a drop of water and one perfectly salty caper. Mix with your caper laden toothpick.

The M2M

A variation of The Greyhound, The M2M is nothing but inspired genius, just like the exquisite world of Mark G. Harris' Mode de M (M as in Mark, for the uninitiated), one that is rich with beads, rhinestone montées and iridescent silks.

Ingredients:
2 ounces of vodka
4 ounces of Ruby Red grapefruit juice
Pomegranate seeds

Chill the vodka over ice in the freezer. Add Ruby Red juice. Stir. Pour into a vintage cocktail glass and drop as many pomegranate seeds as your heart sees fit. Serve neat.

The B&G

(Beauty and Glamour)

The drink favored by Retros’ Liz Cole, The B&G is a playful way to give life to the vodka Martini with a twist.

Ingredients:
2 ounces of vodka
Sufficient white vermouth to bathe the inside of your mixing glass
Jumbo Lemonhead hard candy

Chill the vodka over ice in the freezer. Pour vermouth in your mixing glass, swirl around to cover its walls. Discard the rest. Pour chilled vodka and stir. Serve over a jumbo-sized Lemonhead hard candy. Float a paper-thin lime slice. Serve neat.

The Dr. Y

A drink that could only be served to those who are thirsty for life, The Dr. Y is a beautiful way to give the Cuban Mojito quite a make-over. If a Yatabazah wig can make any doll more beautiful, wait until you taste what basil and licorice will do for the rum-based standard.

Ingredients:
3 ounces of vodka
1 ounce of Metaxa Ouzo (Greek pastis)
10 basil leaves
2 ounces club soda
Juice from one lime
Paper thin lime slices

Mix the vodka and Ouzo over ice. Break the basil leaves with your fingers into the mix. Stir. Pour into a Collins glass and add club soda and lime juice. Stir well.

L’éléphant rose

For those of us who enjoy our cocktail while reading a favorite passage from a beloved book. But be careful, L’éléphant rose is sweet and comfortable as childhood but can have the same effects as overindulgent parents.

Ingredients:
2 dashes Maraschino
1 part bourbon
2 parts red vermouth
Five generous dashes of bitters

Bathe three large square ice cubes with the bitters and Maraschino. Add the bourbon and the vermouth and stir until well-chilled. Serve neat in a festive juice glass.

But truly, the ultimate cocktail moment has to be the one shared by Cary Grant an Eva Marie Saint on that sexy train in Hitchcock's North by Northwest. May your next cocktail hour be as divine. ¡Salud!

Witchy Wear

Once the nights get longer and there is that special spine-tingling chill in the air, many of the denizens of Dolldom make sure that they:

1. Invoke the spirits of the earth.

2. Pull out a big black cauldron and slow cook a potent brew.

3. Carve plenty of turnips to hold beeswax candles, a necessity for lighting the way when coming back home from the forest.

4. Hold a midnight séance to stay up to date with the ongoing activities of those constant companions of the invisible kind.

5. Dust off the black and fabulous witches’ hat.

Is there a better way to celebrate All Hallows’ Eve, one of Dolldom’s favorite holidays, than by throwing a fashion show? For on October 31st, all women ought to channel their inner sorcière, their essential bruja, and be as mysteriously glamorous as Kim Novak was in the film Bell, Book, and Candle.

For this Dolldom exclusive, the gals of Monolithic Studios give Miss Novak a run for the money in dresses by Liz Cole for Retros and Diane Charles. The essential witches' hat could not have come but from the fantastic Peggy Feltrope and was on loan from Dreary Manor, to whose inhabitants we give thanks for their generous heart.

Bewitched

In a dress by Diane Charles (e-Bay seller shesewgood) created with a pattern by Randall Craig, Ivy Jordan strikes a familiar pose to pay homage to Dolldom darling Elizabeth Montgomery in her iconic role as Samantha Stevens. Hat by Peggy Feltrope.

Lost Soul

Gene Marshall plays the girl who ends up walking by a dark mansion. By the movie's end, she has found love with a ghost. In her figure hugging charcoal silk dress with blood red beading by Liz Cole, she is bound to enamor all available spirits.

Queen Witch

Violet Waters is the Queen Witch. No other witch can come close to her beauty and style. Liz created another sexy sheath, this time in a fancy pink silk with flocked net overlay. Those skulls do tell the whole story! The cape and cute felt hat, also by Liz, were made for Miss Barbie M. Roberts and are on loan from her collection.

Self-perceived pioneers, like Mary Kate Olsen, have dared something like the turban but acts that lack real conviction seldom lead to victory. Licca Chan's boyfriend, the ever-dashing Wataru Tachibana, was in dire need of a new wardrobe to enjoy his summer advetures. Ondine, the little girl doll from Sweden, had traveled efficiently in her wooden box along with two dresses and two wigs. Her arrival was celebrated as she came to fill a part of the big void in an old boy's heart. Finally, the old boy could have an elegant little porcelain doll with eyes of gold. She was compact and would travel with him like many of her ancestors had done almost two centuries ago with real children. But after a while, Ondine started to feel lonely. Amidst all the fashion mavens, she longed to have another doll friend, someone who would like to dress up but also have a penchant for getting lost in fake forest sets or find adventures in the pre-war apartment when the old boy was at work. One night, she let him know of her wish and her wish was granted. Soon, Ondine would have an adoptive brother. His name was Eliseo and he was traveling from Córdova, Argentina. One day, after sweeping her house, Ondine sat outside to await the arrival of the newly adopted doll. But nighttime came with its chilly stars and Ondine had to retire. Days passed and Eliseo did not arrive. Weeks passed and Eliseo still did not arrive. Eliseo had been detained, he was in New York stuck in a horrific place called Customs and no one seemed to be able to get him out of there. Ondine, with her super mental powers and gifts for telekinesis, worked her magic and eight hours later news arrived that Eliseo was free and in transit. But horror of horrors, Eliseo ended up being delivered to a musty and dark bazaar hidden in an alley. The old boy went in and found Eliseo in his traveling box. Once at the apartment, all hands were on task, welcoming Eliseo to the city of foggy air. In his elegant chocolate velveteen suit and knit sweater, Eliseo was pure 19th century formality. After writing ten lines for the ballad of his voyage, Eliseo went to look for the little girl whose address he had seen written under his eyelids during a long siesta in New York Customs. But when he got there... There was no one! Suddenly, Eliseo felt homesick! Et pour comble de malheurs, Eliseo feared that Ondine was gone. Tired of waiting for him, he thought, the blond girl had left. Tears started to make an appearance in Eliseo's eyes. "Hello there!" - a little voice called out. It was Ondine who all the while had been inside the house talking to her pet bird."Come in! It's time for coffee." - Ondine said. Inside the little house, the imaginary coffee smelled strong and reminded Eliseo of his home country. He offered Ondine a gift: a delectable plaster pineapple that they both could devour with their eyes for many years to come. Soon thereafter, Eliseo and Ondine had their first photo as a family taken. The old boy proudly displays it at the entrance of his home. For home is where your childhood dreams come true.

The Future of Dolls - All Dolls - Is Handmade

As it had been previously announced here in Dolldom, the way of the future is not the mechanical. Instead of marveling at the wonders of the factory product, the 21st century dollector praises and treasures the work of the artist. Handmade, hand painted, hand assembled - watch for these terms to become increasingly visible not only in print magazines but also in auction sites. What Etsy nurtures, the machine shall not take away. Two examples of the many that abound in the aforementioned cradle of the handcrafted are Katarina Carlsson and Paola Zakimi. And their ideas seems to be as endless as their magical creatures are devastatingly beautiful. Katarina makes Myling dolls and Paola gives light to the many different characters that populate her fertile mind. Ondine is a six-inch porcelain doll that revives, modernizes, and in our opinion, redefines the classic mignonette concept. Eliseo, a four-inch old-fashioned gentleman who spends his days writing poetry and poetic prose, would make Geppetto cry with joy. Dolldom salutes both of these inspiring doll artists.

I met Bambola and Hee on Flickr during one of my late night excursions into amazing worlds of photographic innovation. In Hee’s richly styled tableaux, I witnesses Bambola doing things I had never seen a doll do – from hanging out with Salvador Dalí and sporting his moustache to floating in mid air, enveloped in black tulle, contemplating her own face of the floor.

Bambola captivated me with her sparkling inset eyes that invited me to enter her daring new world, a realm where the surreal and the familiar had combined in perfect harmony. Tyler Wentworth's 10th Anniversary
Q & A with Robert Tonner

This interview was first published in the March/April 2009 issue of Haute Doll magazine

Ernesto: How does it feel to celebrate Tyler’s 10th anniversary? Did you plan Tyler’s introduction in 1999 so that her 10th anniversary would coincide with Barbie’s 50th?

Robert: It feels great to celebrate Tyler’s tenth! I love that the collectors responded to what I was trying to do, and that they still enjoy all that goes on in the house of Wentworth.
As far as tying Tyler’s tenth to Barbie’s fiftieth—I wish I was that smart! Tyler came out in 1999 as a result of all the pieces coming together at the same time. I had been in the doll business for eight years at that time and it had taken me all that time to learn how to make the fashion doll that I wanted to make—the way I wanted to make her.

Ernesto: How has the fashion doll market changed since Tyler’s debut? Are these changes predicated on Tyler’s success?

Robert: The fashion doll market has indeed changed since Tyler’s debut. Collectors have become more sophisticated and demanding every year which keeps us as doll makers on our toes. There are a lot more fashion doll products geared exclusively toward the collector then ever. As much as I’m a fan of Barbie, the biggest change is that a fashion doll no longer has to be eleven and one half inches, and I think Mel Odom was responsible for a great deal of that change. But I think that collectors were so hungry for fashion that the market was ripe for developing. I’d like to think that Tyler set the pace in the fashion doll world, at least for a while. And I would be honored to think that I’ve helped with the current fashion doll “explosion”.

Ernesto: Concerning Tyler’s new face, what criteria did you consider when re-sculpting it? What did you wish for this face to convey?

Robert: I did this face just as I did her first; I started sculpting and stopped when I had a doll that seemed to look like Tyler—I don’t know if I can explain it better than that. I wanted the face to convey a confident, sophisticated, modern woman.

Ernesto: How will Tyler continue to evolve? The BJD Ultimate Basic issue is one example of this evolution. Will Tyler’s vinyl body be articulated any further? Will there be an ankle joint that allows her feet to turn? Any others changes that you wish to share with the readers of Haute Doll?

Robert: I love our Tyler BJD, but my first love will always be plastic! Tyler’s body was designed at the time to represent a woman wearing a corset and a push up bra—that looked new to me at the time. I have just developed a brand new fashion doll body that has evolved the idea of what looks new, and I’d love to add some of my new “thinking” to Tyler’s body. There are a few adjustments I’d love to make to Tyler like a lower leg that could turn out at the knee as well as more rotation in the torso area.

Ernesto: Tonner Doll Company has many successful doll lines, yet it is safe to say that Tyler Wentworth is the one character created by you that has achieved iconic status and that enjoys widespread popularity. 20 years from now, what will Tyler Wentworth’s contribution to the history of the fashion doll be?

Robert: I’d love to think that Tyler will still be around in twenty years! I hope that at the very least she’ll be regarded as a “snapshot” of fashion in doll form in the first decade of the new century. I guess we have to wait and see!

Ernesto: Do you have any favorite Tyler dolls? For example, I always have the following on display:

Robert: I do have a few favorites. I keep approximately twenty Tyler’s in my cases at home and probably forty in cases at work, and I never get tired of looking at them. I have one of the first Tyler’s dressed in the black cashmere coat, I have a one of a kind Tyler that was on the cover of Tyler’s fifth anniversary album, and I really like the “real” clothes like Haute Sydney, New England Excursion, The Look of Luxe, Chill Chasers and Metro Chic. And there are a lot more!

As day turns to night and little lights shine in the dark blue sky, two little ghosts roam the long hallways of Dreary Manor. With Jack O' Lanterns and much desire for mischief, our fluffy friends howl and moan a haunting refrain...Governesses Euphemia and Emilie try in vain to hush the cacophonous voices.

Booooo...hooooo! Boo! Boo!

From a dark corner where candles flicker in a mad dance, Agnes appears. She sees her twin brother's green eyes through the stitched openings of the hood. "Who's your playmate, brother Viktor? " - she asks softly.

Confused and bewildered, Viktor takes off his hood to make sure that his eyes are not playing any tricks on him. And they are not. It is indeed Agnes and her shadow in front of him. Agnes recognizes the look in his eyes and feels a cold air caress her cheeks.

The siblings know now that another fun loving yet unknown soul has entered their silent realm.

Cold as ice, brother and sister run and hide in the darkest corners, hoping that when they reemerge from the shadows, the uninvited guest will have moved on to another home. Maybe yours? Ingredients
2 oz. Hendrick’s Gin
¾ oz. Rhubarb Puree
½ oz. Vanilla Syrup
½ oz. Gooseberry Syrup
Preparation
Shake and strain into a martini glass. Garnish with a gooseberry.

Ingredients
1 oz Hendrick's Gin
1/2 Cucumber simple syrup
Rosé champagne
(To make cucumber simple syrup, blend 1 cucumber and 4 oz simple syrup)
Preparation
Pour ingredients in order above into a champagne flute.
Stir gently before garnishing with the
cucumber garnish of your choosing.

A vintage sweater, preferably dead stock, is indeed a treasure of a find. Paired with BillyBoy*s knit shorts, this moss green Ken sweater, like its wearer, will get plenty of action this coming fall. Come winter, it will still be a great piece for layering under a heavy coat.
The question is where to find the loot before the moths do! The fashionable never leave a stone unturned - from Etsy to e-Bay to (can you believe?) actual real-time shopping at retro boutiques. This focused attitude will bear a rich harvest of cozy woolens.
